A nostalgic story of village
In recent news from the india express(link) the china has implemented a time bound science literacy program for the china farmers. Started in 2005 the science literacy rate has raised from 1.5% to the 3.27% still low but a great achievement. This all is to compare china with the developed country and to raise the productivity and quality by raising scientific aptitudes in the farmers.
Off-course the china is far ahead of india. The scenario in india is different. In India there are small farmers and the farm output and value are less for their livings.literacy rate is low and science litrecy rate is very very low.
Lets talk the ground situation in reference to my village. 20 years ago In my village all (almost) were dependent on the farming. The sugarcane be the cash crop. Most people were vegetarian and main protein source was milk and cereals as now. Ghar (where live) and Gher (where animals and other agricultural tool kept) and jungle (tube-well) were the three points where life stuck. In morning around 5 O'clock every body go to the toilet in the jungle (fields) on return first thing was sweeping the floor. Ladies sweep the Ghar (Home) and Man sweep the Gher(animal yard). The cowdung gathered during the night was collected and loaded into the bullock cart and disposed to a pit where it convert to fertilizer during the year. Some the the cowdung was converted in the small discs which are called upla or gosa in a yard outside the village. these upla or gosa in dry were used as fuel with timber to cook food.
after disposing the cow dung its time for the bathe. Pump water out of hand-pump and take bathe with bucket full of water. In breakfast big and thick breads (rotis) with milk / mattha and curry was main food.
After breakfast around 7 O clock it was time to go the farms with bulockcart. Work in the Farms and cut the fodder for the animals. load the fodder on the bulock cart and return home. In Gher the fodder is cut in to small pieces with the help of cutting machine with diesel engine. Serve the fodder to the animals take a bath again and take lunch.
In noon for youngsters its time for gossips and card play. around 3 O clock AN its time back to the farms, work there take fodder and return by 6-7 O clock in evening. Serve the fodder to animals take a bath and go for dinner. after dinner in dark its time for gossip again. Now a days there are TV in almost every home but 10 year before it was limited to some home at that time gathering for TV watch which usually powered by lead acid battery. Grandpa heads toward tube well in jungle for night stay and irrigation. The electricity was limited so some 6 hrs per day and that was the time for tube-wells to irrigate the farms. In Dark nights grandpa used to divert and control the waters to fields.
There was mostly social issues to talk no science. If somebody starts speaking science he would be embarrased like a criminal. Which is the bad part of the nostalgic feeling.
Science education and apptitude is necessary in place of hell panchayat politics to launch our villages in to the mainstream of economy. But that soothing nostalgic feeling make us home again in peace.
